AFam Power Plc is the Nation’s Premier Thermal Station. It is located in the town of Okoloma in Ndoki community Area of Oyigbo Local Government of Rivers State in the outskirts of Port Harcourt.
The station is named after Afam which happens to be the host village from where the first two gas village from where the first two gas wells were developed to feed the first two gas turbines in 1962.
The location was chosen because of the relatively cheap and available natural gas in the region.
Natural gas is the fuel used to run the gas turbine. Afam is on of the seventeen towns and villages in the south of Imo
River merged into rivers State in 1976 by the Nasir Boundary Adjustment Commission.
The village now formed the present Oyigbo Local Government with its Headquarters in Okoloma (Afam).
It is bounded on the Nourth by Imo River, East by Ayama, South by Egberu and West by Obeama-Asa villages.
The station has Twenty (20) Gas Turbines which were installed in phases as the power demand in the country increased.
Afam I consist of four units (1-4) manufactured by Brown Boveri Company (BBC) in 1961 with installed capacity 56.6mw and commissioned in 1963. Afam II consist of four units (5-8) manufactured by Brown Boveri company (BBC) in 1974 with installed capacity of 95.6mw and was commissioned in 1976. Afam II was consist of four Units (9-12) manufactured by Brown Boveri in 1977 with installed capacity of 110.0mw and it was commissioned in1978. Afam IV consist of six units (13-18) manufactured by Asea Brown Boveri (ABB) in 1981 with installed capacity of 75mw each and was commissioned in 1982.
Afam V consist of two units (19-20) manufactured by Siemens in 1981 with installed capacity of 138mw each and it commissioned in 2001
