BAHIR DAR University - one of the largest universities in Federal Democratic Republic Ethiopia, which has more than 45,000 students and over 53 undergraduate and 30 graduate programmes.
Bahir Dar University (BDU) was inaugurated in May 2000 (1992 E.C.) when the former Bahir Dar Teachers College and Bahir Dar Polytechnic Institute joined together to become the Education and Engineering Faculties, respectively, of the new University.
BDU has now four colleges, three faculties, five schools and two institutes. Located in the university main campus are the College of Science, the Faculty of Social Science, Faculty of Arts, Language, Journalism & Communication, the College of Medical and Health Science and the School of Law. The last two are temporarily based in the main campus and they are expected to have their own campus in the near future.
The College of Agriculture and Environmental Science, the various engineering schools as well as the Institute of Textile Garment & Fashion Engineering are found in the Engineering campus formerly known as the Polytechnic Institute. A new campus for the College of Agriculture and Environmental Science is now under construction. The Institute of Land Administration will also have its own campus soon.
