The Faculty of Sciences and Technology (FCT NOVA), located at the Campus of Caparica (30 ha), south of Lisbon, is today one of the most prestigious Portuguese engineering and science schools. With nearly 8 000 students, 440 academic (95% holding a PhD) and 200 non-academic staff, FCT NOVA is organized in 14 Departments and 6 Support Services.
FCT NOVA participates in the consortia sponsored by the Portuguese State with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT),the University of Carnegie Mellon (CMU) and the University of Texas at Austin (UTA) offering some of its advanced study programmes. FCT NOVA has strong links with several Portuguese and Foreign Universities, related to the exchange of teachers and students, in the framework of the existing 300 bilateral agreements within numerous European and National research projects.
The recent introduction in all its Undergraduate Programs (1st Cycle) and Master Degrees (2nd Cycle) of “FCT’s Curricular Profile”, aims to endow students with vital capacities for a quick labour market admission, such as soft-skills and a professional internship in a company with activity in the same area as the students’ study field in Portugal or abroad. An education in entrepreneurship was also not forgotten, thus increasing even more the abundant existence of an entrepreneurial drive in FCT NOVA between students’ and Professors’ which led to the creation of many successful spin-offs, which transferred knowledge to the market helping to create value and social impact.
